The Annual Ninety Mile Beach Red Snapper Classic fishing competition is the largest surfcasting event in the world. Held over five days with prizes in excess of $250,000.
Claimed to be the largest surfcasting event in the world, the Ninety Mile Beach Red Snapper Classic attracts anglers from all over New Zealand, Australia and has become a popular event for international anglers as well. Every February national and international fishermen and women head to Waipapakauri, New Zealand for this annual five-day fishing competition.
The prizes are generous in excess of $250.000 with the biggest snapper taking out a huge $50,000 prize with lesser cash prizes for the runners-up as well as numerous giveaways.
It is not just the prizes that attract competitors and spectators to this event, but also the fun filled atmosphere and camaraderie and friendly rivalry. Many enduring friendships have been made during the competition and families are most welcome to attend. During the competition the beach takes on the atmosphere of a holiday picnic with anglers, their friends and families converging on the beach with chairs, rugs and picnic baskets.
There are many types of local accommodation available from tourist parks (caravan parks) through to motel and hotel accommodation. Business managers and accommodation proprietors offer a relaxed and hospitable atmosphere and extend a warm welcome visitors, but they also warn that accommodation sometimes fills up months ahead, so recommend that you book early.
Anglers can enter the event as an individual or competitors in the heaviest snapper competition can enter the team event. Prizes for the team event are awarded to the team with the heaviest weight of up to 4 snapper caught in one day.
